More information about recycling electronic equipment

What does it cost to recycle a PC?

A $30 fee covers the cost of shipping AND responsibly recycling a full carton of electronic equipment. As long
as the carton meets the size and weight parameters, we will recycle all the electronic items in the carton.

Why should I recycle my PC instead of putting it in the trash?

Electronics contain pollutants such as lead, mercury, cadmium, chromium, phosphorous, lithium, and polycarbons. Electronics that are dumped in the trash often end up in landfills, where these substances can leach into the groundwater
and soil. Flame retardant chemicals in computer plastics can release highly toxic dioxins when burned in trash incinerators. Research estimates that electronic waste accounts for 80 percent of American’s toxic garbage and is growing exponentially. Electronic waste contains is a toxic threat to soil and water supplies worldwide.

Can I send any type of electronic materials for recycling?

We accept most electronic materials that can be shipped legally for recycling. Things you can send include: Computers, laptops, intact monitors, keyboards, mice, printers, scanners, digital cameras, PDA’s, servers, external drives, and cell phones. Things we cannot accept include monitors with disassembled, cracked, or shattered monitors and loose batteries. Shipping regulations restrict shipping these toxic items.

How many boxes can I ship with one label?

You can ship only one box per label. If you want to ship two or more boxes, please indicate the number
of cartons you wish to ship on the order form. Each label package is $30.

What do I do if I have a large quantity of electronic equipment to recycle?

This program is designed for individuals who have a few cartons of electronics to recycle. If you have a large
volume of electronic materials for recycling, please call Metech Recycling at 866.479.4920 or email us at recycleapc@metechrecycling.com. We will provide options for you based on your location and the volume of
material you have.

What does "responsible recycling" mean?

Recycle A PC is a program from Metech Recycling. Metech Recycling maintains eight recycling locations specializing in
electronics recycling solutions that meet the highest environmental standards. Metech Recycling locations have been audited and named as Pledged e-Stewards by the Basel Action Network (BAN), an independent nonprofit that works to ensure exports of hazardous electronic waste to developing countries are eliminated and replaced with producer responsibility and green design programs/legislation. BAN encourages all communities, businesses, governments, and citizens to be sure they use only e-Steward recyclers. Metech Recycling is also an ISO 9001:2001 and 14001 certified company which means we meet the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards for quality management and environmental management.

How is my PC recycled?

Your carton of electronic materials is received at one of our Metech Recycling locations and the electronics inside are sorted and manually de-manufactured. Metech Recycling invests in the labor-intensive process of de-manufacturing to divert greater than 99% of materials from landfills and incinerators. We then condense, shred, or crush the component material and distribute the end product to certified downstream partners for reprocessing and recycling into new products or raw materials.

Where does all the material go?

We ship the processed component materials to carefully selected partners that prepare it for reintroduction into manufacturing processes. We can provide full documentation about our partners’ processes and our downstream process is audited by BAN to ensure that materials are not shipped to landfills or exported to developing countries.

How do I know data on my computer or hard drives are securely destroyed?

We ask that you remove or wipe data from hard drives before shipping your electronics to Recycle A PC. In addition, as part of the deconstruction process, Metech Recycling will physically destroy data devices by sending them through our giant shredder. By completely de-manufacturing electronics and sending data containing devices through the shredder, no one can gain access to information that was once stored on the equipment.

Is it illegal to dispose of electronics in landfills?

In many states, electronics are classified as hazardous waste; so many local regulations dictate that electronic waste cannot be disposed of in solid waste landfills but must be disposed of at a hazardous waste facility or recycled. Please see your state’s Department of Public Health and Environment’s website for more information.
